How To Hide Your WordPress Login

Posted on April 27th, 2018 by Jean

After receiving several alerts today that “user locked out from signing in”, I decided to hide my wordpress login page. I had successfully utilized this method of hiding my login page years ago on my business site, but could not find the directions today when I so desperately needed them.

A quick review of 2 key wordpress files allowed me to figure out how to proceed. There are plugins out there to hide your login, but this is the method used through your cpanel.

PART ONE

Log in to your cpanel account

Choose File Manager from the Files Section

Under “settings” (upper right corner), select “Show Hidden Files”

In your home file, look for .htaccess

Highlight .htaccess and click EDIT from your top tool bar

A text editor notice appears. Click EDIT to proceed

After text in this file, input the following

ErrorDocument 401 “Unauthorized Access”
ErrorDocument 403 “Forbidden”
<FilesMatch “wp-login.php”>
AuthName “Authorized Only”
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /home/yourdirectory/.wpadmin
require valid-user
</FilesMatch>
<Files 403.shtml>
order allow,deny
allow from all
</Files>

Insert your directory name (noted in red above). It will show you at the top of the page, CURRENTLY EDITING HOME/______/

You can also enter IP addresses you’d like to block. They would be entered after </files>

Example:

deny from 77.92.73.102
deny from 66.147.244.109
deny from 208.117.46.9

And so on. My list of blocked IPs is quite long.

Hit SAVE

PART TWO

Now you have to create the .wpadmin file.

Click on the top file in the tree on the left of your cpanel. It should say home/_____ <— your directory

Click on NEW FILE (top left of the tool bar)

Name the file .wpadmin

Highlight the file and choose EDIT

A text-editor warning appears, click EDIT and GO

In this file, you need to add a code that is generated here.

Using the online .htpasswd generator, choose your user name and password. These do NOT have to match your WordPress login.

Copy the code that is generated, and paste it into your new .wpadmin file. SAVE

You’re done!

When you try to access your login page, you will now be greeted with a new window asking for your authorized user name and password.

Introducing me!

Posted on January 15th, 2014 by Jean

I thought I’d follow along with the Zero To Hero assignments to improve my site. The first challenge is to introduce myself.

Hello! I’m Jean, a 40-something woman making her way through life, trying to juggle family, business and everything in between. We live in Arizona although I hail from the Bay Area of California and spent my high school years in Reno, Nevada. I also did a short stint in Appleton, Wisconsin, and spent two summers in Sarasota, Florida.

My husband, Tom, and I have been together twelve years. We run our own business (celebrating its 25th anniversary this year!) publishing the local real estate guide. It is a full color, glossy magazine of which we are very proud. It is distributed in California, Nevada and Arizona.

We have two daughters, ages 11 and 9, who love school, dancing, drawing, acting, acrobatics, and animals. During the summer months, we travel to Anaheim as a family, and enjoy many of that area’s attractions. On shorter breaks, we visit local points of interest such as Grand Canyon Caverns, the Wild Animal Park in Valentine, or the old mining town of Oatman. We also enjoy boating on the Colorado River which is 3 miles from our house.

When I need to get away, I visit nearby Las Vegas, a 90-minute drive north, to shop at the various malls and enjoy a decadent meal. I always bring a treat home such as cupcakes, cheesecake, or fresh fruit from Trader Joe’s.

Before falling off to sleep at night, I watch recorded episodes of The Housewives of (name any city), Vanderpump Rules, The Shahs of Sunset – all things Bravo – or The Dead Files, Ghost Hunters, The Haunting Of – all things Travel Channel. I wake up to Headline News or Weekend Express every morning. I love to know what’s going on in the world.

I don’t exercise. I don’t eat right. But I think about both every day.

I’m not very crafty, but I will attempt crafts for the sake of my children.

I’m shy and reserved, but I won’t take crap.

I enjoy learning and sharing knowledge.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please ask.

Meet The Blogger | Living, Loving, Laughing…

Posted on October 7th, 2013 by Jean

As part of my new series, Meet The Blogger, I’m introducing my favorite bloggers.

Angelia of Living, Loving, Laughing...

Angelia has been Freshly Pressed on WordPress twice four times, and that is probably how I first found her blog, Living, Loving, Laughing…. She lives up to all those titles with her full life, her loving relationships, and her positive attitude.

You can follow Angelia on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter.

Q & A with Angelia

Q: How is your new granddaughter, Averey, and what is the best part about being a Grandmother?

A: My granddaughter is the sweetest thing I have seen (besides her mother). She lights up my heart. My favorite part of being a grandmother is holding her tiny fingers in mine and just being amazed over this little person that I love more than I thought possible.

Q: How was your Chics Who Click exhibit received at the Arlington Museum of Art?

A: Our Chics Who Click Exhibit was a wonderful success. We had several paper and blog write-ups within the local city news. A film crew from North Texas Now interviewed several of us. We had very nice turnouts at our monthly receptions and many prints were sold by individual photographers. We are currently looking for your next venue or art show.

Q: Being a corporate travel agent, you must book some amazing trips. What would be your dream vacation?

A: The key word is corporate, as in, boring, stuffy business trips. They can be very demanding and urgent, but that is what I like. I like the fast pace of corporate travel. I did have some time doing vacation travel when I first started out. Mostly, I booked Las Vegas. My dream vacation would be Costa Rica – beaches, mountains, and beautiful waterfalls.

Q: Your Christmas Card photo shoot posts are such a joy to read. What are the ingredients for a successful family Christmas card?

A: The key ingredient to Christmas card shoots are the outfits. Each year we color coordinate outfits between ourselves (and our dogs if included). There is usually a central theme too. One year was Christmas pajamas, one year was hats, and one year was reindeer antlers. But the most important thing is to have FUN!

Q: You have shared favorite and faulty phone apps with us in the past. Do you have a new favorite app, what is it, and what does it do?

A: My newest favorite app is Zillow. It’s a house hunting app. No, I am not looking for a house, nor are we selling our house. I am just obsessed with looking at houses inside and out. I probably should have been a realtor.

Thank you, Angelia, for visiting with us today!
