Angry Birds Birthday Cake
Posted on July 30th, 2011 by JeanThe girls and I wanted to do something special for hubby’s birthday, so when I saw these adorable Angry Bird cake pops, I knew we had to (attempt to) make them. Tom is a huge Angry Birds fan.

A few days before his birthday, we went to JoAnne’s Fabric & Crafts to buy lollipop sticks and meltable candies. We also found candy eyes, reasonably priced, and overpriced beaks which we nixed. At the check-out, the friendly cashier recommended a cake-pop tray. Sounded ultra-easy to use, so we bought it too.
Birthday eve we began baking. We whipped the chocolate cake mix, poured it into the mold, and popped it into the oven. Ten minutes later, we inserted the lollipop sticks, and returned the pops to the oven to finish baking.
Baked and cooled, it was time to pop the pops out of the mold.
Mistake – the cake balls slid down the lollipop sticks. Speared birds wasn’t the effect we wanted.
We baked another batch of birds, and began melting the colorful candies to coat the cooled ones. We stuck eyes on while the candy-coating was gooey, then sat the birds in the freezer to harden. We frosted orange beaks on upon removing the birds from the freezer.
There was enough cake batter left over to bake a single-layer round, and we frosted it green to represent a grassy hill. We were ready to surprise Tom, and surprised he was!

I’m not a baker by any means, but it sure was fun attempting these.
• What themed cake would you make?
• Do you have any cake ball tips?
• Play much Angry Birds?

What a cool cake! I’ve never played Angry Birds, but I think that like reading the Harry Potter books, I’m about the only one who hasn’t. ;O)
Let’s see…a themed cake for me. That’d have to be a little farm with a red barn and a black & white cow. Yeah, that sounds about right.

I can envision your little farm cake, Beth. Sounds darling!

My kids are way into Angry Birds. It’s insane. Not gonna lie, though – the AB cake pops would be too much work for me.

MK, these were too much for me too, honestly. I had to fit it in to my schedule though as it was his 50th. Never would have gotten them for his 49th. Ha!

I’m so glad Conan O’Brien had some Angry Birds skits on his show, so I could appreciate (and, understand) your efforts to recreate some video game/phone app magic.

The girls did such a great job! I’m curious how did you get the pops to not slide down the stick again?
I’ve never tried cake pops but they way I orginally saw them was was in a book from Bakerella. You crumble the cake in a bowl you roll them like a meatball.
My Palm Pre doesn’t support the app so no angry bird for me. I so swear I’m getting an iPhone when this contract is up!

Thanks, Sherri! We only got one bird to stay on the stick, and I think that was pure luck. We’ll either try a dense brownie, or roll the cake like you suggest. Come to the dark side… the angry birds are calling you! No app for the palm pre? How dare they!

What a fun way to celebrate the hubby’s b-day! Those Angry Birds are really cool.
Happy Belated Birthday!
Your birds are cute, you did a great job. They remind me of those ghosts from Pac-Man. LOL
Hey, now there’s a theme cake idea.

STOP IT. You did not make that Angry Birds cake. I am way impressed Jean- I’ve been checking those out on Pinterest, but thinking they were WAY beyond my skills.
So those cake pop trays- do you recommend them? Because I’ve been shying away from the whole cake-pop thing for a while now. But that seems so much easier…

Well, I made the uglier of the two angry bird cakes you see here. LOL! I haven’t tried the cake/frosting, rolling ball up in hand method, but I’m thinking the cake-pan is not a necessity. The plain cake is just so fragile when it pops out.

My husband and I are avid angry birds fans.
That’s so cool that they have a cake ball pan.
I have yet to attempt cake balls. I like your idea of putting them on top of a cake-because frankly I like REAL cake.

I like real cake too, Traci. Cake balls wouldn’t be enough for me.

So true, Mami. Thank you. I must say I’m subscribed and read all of your posts, but don’t always have time to swing by. You are amazing!

Ok, I laughed out loud at the speared birds comment. Just did themed cakes for my boys’ birthdays – a train and a teddy bear (they are 3 and 1). I used Wilton puzzle cakes where there are different cupcakes that fit together to make various shapes. So easy and looked much better than any other cakes I’d made… but still not as impressive as your angry bird cake pops! Maybe next year… : )

Hi Jessica! At first, I thought you wrote train wreck. Yes, that’s exactly the type of cake I could master! LOL! Thanks so much for stopping by. I shall return the favor.
