A Pound A Day

Posted on May 15th, 2011 by Jean

I’ve lost 3 lbs. in 3 days, and this is what I’ve learned so far.

The SparkPeople Diet Tracker App is awesome! Download it, tell it your current weight, your goal weight, and go. It’s easy to track your calories burned and consumed. Sparkpeople is also online. I just signed in and was surprised to see that all of my input from the phone app was already updated online. So when your kids steal your phone to play Angry Birds, you can still update your records.

If you buy Orville Redenbacher’s 100 Calorie Smart Pop, you’d better buy extra popcorn for your family. The first three packets I nuked were confiscated by my daughters and husband. When I finally was able to eat my share in peace, I found it to be very tasty especially with a sprinkling of chili powder, cumin and garlic salt.

Thomas’ 110 calorie whole wheat bagel thins are fairly good. They’re chewy, filling, and not terrible. Hubby won’t eat them again even though I topped his with butter and cream cheese. Other flavors include plain, raisin, and “everything” (with onion, sesame and poppy seeds).

Freshness is key. A slice of fresh lemon in my water puts me in the right frame of mind. The color, scent, and flavor say “healthy” to me. Adding a slice of fresh cucumber to your water is a treat I learned from the salon at Mandalay Bay. Fresh cilantro in my salad adds a burst of flavor and really livens the greens.

What products do you turn to when you want to lose a few pounds?

  1. I’ve been using SparkPeople too. (online though cuz my phone=suck) I really like it so far but the online version is fairly cluttered. However, it’s free so that’s alright.

My name is JeannetteAurora in case you want to befriend me.

Thank you, Jeannette! You will be my 1st Sparkpeople friend. 🙂
Online makes my head spin a bit. You’re right about cluttered.

  2. I have been using the Libra app on my phone. It has a line for BMI, which is a good goal for anyone to accomplish.
I always turn to plenty of leafy greens, for bulk and the feeling of full. Lately I eat only fruit in the morning, and only vegetable for the remainder of the day. Just taking a break from lean meats and getting proteins from nuts and legumes.. So far, I’m losing a pound a day, too. Seven in seven. However, that is bound to slow down. I am quite sure we all lose water weight very quickly in the beginning of any weight reduction plan. I have at least another dress size to go… grrrrrrrr. Blasted winter months! lol

You are doing great, Jill! I’ll check into the Libra app. It sounds good! I agree – soon we won’t be losing a lb. a day. Enjoying it while it lasts. Thanks for stopping by! Continue your great progress!

  3. I haven’t used any apps on my phone, but now I may have to check into this! As far as foods go, I do pretty well with the 110 calorie bagels also, but I have a couple of secret weapons for my sweet tooth: deep chocolate VitaTops and Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. To die for.

Congrats on the success – you’ve lit a bit of a fire under me this morning!

No apps?! Oh gosh, I have so many it’s crazy. Just downloaded a spongebob app, plus 2 farting apps for my kids. Yikes! LOL!
Thank you for sharing your secret weapons, Angie! I’m going to try both of them. 🙂
Thank you for the congrats and encouragement.
You can do it! Let me know if you try sparkpeople.

No apps? Shit, Jean. I have no cell phone at all!

Well, technically I do. My brother gave me one as part of a “family plan” he was going to “save a fortune” with (yet his bill is larger than most mortgages because he’s incapable of putting the fucking thing down). However, I only used mine once or twice and haven’t even seen the damn thing in over 4 years. It’s probably in the basement beside my Rubik’s Cubes.

My rotary phones still work just fine and have much better sound quality.

Sedate Me, you and my brother have that in common — no cell phones. LOL about how much he is spending. Rotary? Seriously? Those were the coolest.

Being a Luddite has big advantages. It saves me both personal time and money. Last I heard, my idiot brother spends $800 a month on his “smart” phone plan. He’s on the stupid thing all time, yaking like a damn woman. 😉

My rotary phones are in low use rooms, but the less jarring ring (a real bell!) is reason enough to keep them. They also have great sound clarity. I also have a converted Waltons era crank wall-phone hooked up in the garage. I just wish I had gotten my hands on my grannie’s rotary wall-phone. It was a REAL wall-phone, unlike desktops turned on their sides that they laughably call “wall-phones”. The receivers keep falling out of these pieces of shit. Like all rotary wall phones, hers had a claw/scoop to keep everything in place.

These modern “phones” couldn’t interest me less. As you said, the old rotary phones are so much cooler. I’d murder for one of these.

Ok, I do not even know what a Luddite is. Are you Amish?
I’m green w/envy over your crank wall-phone. Wow, those Ericofons are awesome! Thanks for the link.

  4. Or you could do the unthinkable and give up drinking. Ha-ha-ha! That would probably be good for 50 pounds worth of calories a month.

Sedate Me, I haven’t had a cocktail in a week. Think of the buzz I’ll have next time!

You’ve given up the sauce for a whole week?

If I had 2 kids, I’d have to walk around with a booze I.V. and a knapsack of -er- smile inducing “prescriptions” from a “doctor” I know.

  5. I have been off & on with SP. I do love it’s features, but actually logging shit makes me mad – as in – why is that glass (or 3) of wine counting against my daily calories????? I’m mommakiss if you want to stalk me there – but I may find you first…

I want to, MommaKiss! I can’t even find my sparkmail box this morning. I’m trying to send you a msg, and it’s telling me I haven’t verified my email. My head is spinning, so bear with me. Coffee, 2nd cup, stat!

  6. Yes, I know, I am disgusting – refried beans with taco sauce. A sprinkling of cheese if I’ve been good. I looooove Mexican food and this is filling and tasty. Just stay away from our house in the evenings… 😉
I might to have to try this app. Although, like my sis, I am currently appless. And, at age 35, that hurls me back into the dark ages I know!

LOL, Mindy! You are not disgusting! I love Mexican food too! Lord knows what I’ll do next time I have a craving!
Appless?! I’m going to have to blog on apps. There are some really cool ones out there! Lots of free ones too.
    Thanks for coming by, Mindy!

  7. Hi Jean…sorry for my absence in the blogging world! I had a few moments in between my exam revision to visit your blog!

Congratulations on losing 3lb in 3 days! That app looks rather good. Currently have no use for it myself at the moment (although one that enables you to put on weight would help me right now!).

In answer to your question, I guess celery would be good to turn to if I wanted to lose weight – apparently you burn more calories eating it than there is in it!!! Food I turn to to put on weight…well there is always time for cookies and burgers! :s

Just a quick catch up, I now write blogs for professional organisations (hence my personal one never taking off). I write for the advisory body for the whole of my career and also for a scientific journal! It’s tough, but fun.

I’ll be back soon to visit your blog again soon!

Hi Jason! I’m not sure if the app will help you put on the lbs, but McDonalds could surely super-size you. LOL!
Celery is good with peanut butter or cream cheese. On its own, I don’t care for it.
Look are you, going pro! That’s great! I’m really proud of you!
Thank you for taking the time to visit. I hope to have a more interesting post next time around. 🙂

  8. Congratulations, Jean! 3 pounds in 3 days is awesome. 🙂 I’ll definitely check out the app. I haven’t really turned to products in the past when I wanted to lose weight, but am always open to trying out new things. I started a 5:45am bootcamp class at the beginning of May and so far that’s working. Have lost a few pounds and am starting to see muscles that I haven’t seen in years. It’s hard getting up at 5, but it’s so relieving to have the workout done and over with by 7am. And usually a good workout means a healthy breakfast too. Can’t wait to hear more about your journey. 🙂

Hi Heather. Thanks! Oh, you’re doing great with the bootcamp! I’ve always been afraid to try one of those.
Thank you for the encouragement. I hope to keep this up!

  10. I like the Orville popcorn, too, and those bread thins (similar to the bagel ones). I also tend to keep a bag of those mini Dove chocolates around and have one every day. It works if I just let it dissolve slowly and savor it.
